When you are in the process of a Private Registration Number Transfer, known by the DVLA and the Automotive Industry as a “Cherished Transfer” (CT), you will find there is a period, of up to 9 days after the DVLA have processed your application when your vehicle will be in limbo to third party companies, until the plate is completely adopted throughout the third party systems. During this time you may have issues, such as changing your insurance policy details.
There are three different scenarios:
Cherished Transfer on your Present Vehicle: Once you have applied to make a Cherished Transfer on your vehicle, you can check the status of your Cherished Transfer, by entering your Registration Number in the Governments DVLA website (click here). Once the Cherished Transfer has taken place, within the DVLA Database you can then contact your Insurance Company and inform them of the Cherished Transfer and request your policy is amended accordingly, then at this time make the Registration Plate change. If the Insurance Company tell you that their systems are still showing the previous Registration Number, point them to (click here), however please have a copy of your Cherished Transfer Documentation as this may be required by your insurance company or if your stopped by the police.
Cherished Transfer to a Pre-Owned Vehicle: Once you have applied to make a Cherished Transfer from your present vehicle to another pre-owned vehicle, you can check the status of your Cherished Transfer by entering your Registration Number in the Government site (click here). Once the Cherished Transfer has taken place, within the DVLA Database you can then contact your Insurance Company and inform them of the Cherished Transfer and request your policy is transferred accordingly, then at this time make the Registration Plate change. If the Insurance Company tell you that their systems are still showing the previous Registration Number, point them to the following url (click here), however please have a copy of your Cherished Transfer Documentation as this maybe required by your insurance company or if your stopped by the police.
Cherished Transfer to a New Vehicle: The dealership you are purchasing the new vehicle from will be able to do this for you. They will also have the Cherished Registration Plate on your New Vehicle ready for you on collection, just ask the dealership for information.
The reason for the delay in processing your Cherished Transfer is the time between the DVLA actually actioning the Transfer, which is immediate on their database, so being visible on their own Website, (click here), however third party companies licenced to use the data within internal systems, may take up to 9 days to utilise the amended data, due to the delivery and cleansing process performed by one of the six, DVLA Bulk Data Providers (click here).
